Eh, I remember reading somewhere that she started writing the books before she’d visited Forks. Someone told me she just looked up what the rainiest town in the continental US was and plunked her story there. But I could easily be wrong.

Not even slightly a fan of Twighlight, but I do have a comment. Where do you get the idea that the author has never been to Forks? Her mother lives in Renton, WA and is friends with my mother.

oh I understand the concept of having a holiday home, weekend retreat etc. Many people in the UK do this, but as far as I’m aware there’s no such thing here as a property like this, where you can’t legally live in it.

I’m not including things like caravans at the coast of course, as I wouldn’t class those as a “home”, but this I would. That’s the part that has me stumped.

Yup! Many people in Europe buy traditional rural family homes to use as either as a Summer vacation home or as a property “investment”, with the goal to modernize it and then resell it later for a profit.

My parents bought such a place ( two floor farm cottage) from the owner. The owner had used the place as a vacation home for his kids (cheaper than a B&B). There was no separate bathroom or kitchen with the only bath-tub was/still is in the basement next to hot water boiler, while the “kitchen” (freezer+gas cooker attached to portable cylinders) was in the living room next to the fireplace. The only toilet was in a tiny room inside one of the ground floor bedrooms. Even now, the shower is attached directly to the hot water boiler.

Other people have just bought farm-barns with earths floor with the goal of turning them into quaint farm cottages.

I’m guessing “Vitamin R” refers to actor Robert Pattinson, who plays the vampire character Edward Cullen. To which my 12-year-old daughter replies, “Gross. Team Jacob forever!”
