Clearly this is not how things were supposed to be. Let’s look at the box:

paint-by-number

Whoops! Looks like we included the wrong set of paints. Sorry about that! We’ll send out a replacement ASAP.

You could certainly tone down that house by using less… er, striking… colors, but just the sheer number and pattern of different colors would make it stand out regardless. Even the shapes in the architecture say “Look at me!” Someone wanted their home to be memorable.

  2. Texchanchan says:

Interior is interesting too, without being as spectacular as the outside except for the bright red kitchen or whatever it is. The hardwood floors are excellent, if worn, and I’m glad the owners’ desire to paint didn’t extend to them.

If somebody decides to tear this house down I hope they sell it for parts.

    • bryn says:

It looks a little like it is already *made* of parts, like one of those old beaten up cars where every panel is from a different colour car where they’ve been replaced one by one over the years. The ones where the advert says “bodywork needs a little doing but runs really well”

The exterior paint job evokes Hundertwasser (http://reisserbilder.at/bildergross/Hundertwasser_Haus_Wien_House_Vienna_Spaetsommer_Late_Summer_BH274_g.jpg) even though the house is so scruffy looking. And at least it’s interesting and not some bland tapioca and puke combination that you can see on so many bland, uninteresting houses these days.

    • Janet says:

Yes yes yes! I love it when people use an actual color. For the record, pay attention rug + house paint people – the aforementioned tapioca/puke as well as cat poop/beige/dull sage/etc are anti colors.
I don’t know what it is about black and white checkerboard but it draws me. I was going to use it to accent my periwinkle and purple trimmed potting shed- just the edges on the hutch shelves- but my honey bunny forstalled me by using old barn boards. *Sweetie! Was that on purpose!?*

There is surely no finer use for Photoshop skillz than reverse-engineered paint-by-numbers.

  5. mudslicker says:

    What? No Colorforms?

    • Vivian says:

Squeee! I love colorforms! Thanks for the memories.

      • LMA says:

I not only had and loved Colorforms, but I had what I guess can best be described as Felt Colorforms — don’t know the actual name of them. You had a black felt-covered board and a whole ton of different shapes and superbright colors outlining people, trees, animals, etc and through the magic of uh, felt, you could stick them on the board and layer them into pictures. Then later, like Colorforms, you could peel all the pieces back off to reuse again and again. Anyone else here remember them? This house looks like something I “assembled” with the Felt Colorforms.

        • Vivian says:

Ah, flannelgraphs… beloved of Sunday school teachers everywhere. My mom had a set with literally thousands of pieces, designed to illustrate every scene in the Bible. It came not-pre-cut-out so we devoted hours to cutting out all those little tiny pieces of felt; I don’t think we ever completely finished.

          But I don’t remember seeing a set that wasn’t Bible-related.

        • Ann says:

Ah yes! I had a set, not made for Sunday school but I remember them there as well. As I recall they “stuck” longer than the Colorforms (memories!) I’m afraid that we are dating ourselves here. I will come clean and admit that I am, alas, “mid-century.”

          • Vivian says:

Don’t worry, I’m considerably younger and we had them too. ;-) Sadly, though, I think they’ve been replaced by videos and computer-generated graphics for the current generation of kids.

        • Sara says:

Flannelboards! I’m fully immersed in the world of preschoolers, and trust me — they’re still used all the time.

          • ann says:

flannelboards and Colorforms….. sigh: the good old days. MUCH more fun than playing with any computer-generated ‘equivilent’ (ya can’t stick video to Mom’s stove like Colorforms, can ya?!? and if you’re lucky, felt can be fun with a cat…..

  6. Mr Moo says:

Clearly they are intending to use the house for crash tests.

  7. KS says:

Mary Engelbreit called. She wants her house back.

  8. rachel says:

They run out of paint for the back of the house?

  9. mebuck says:

It’s reminiscent of the Frederickson house in the movie “Up”…..

  10. Jedi Knight Ivyan says:

It’s almost like the house was decorated by someone with multiple personalities. Each personality with a distinctly different sense of style. Interesting.

    • robyn says:

Yeah, I see that. Some personalities are heavily manic, others incredibly depressed, as evidenced by the blah-colored rooms. And the storage shed–what happened there?!

I dunno, overall I don’t like this colory one as much as some previous ones. It just looks kindof tired and sad. :(

      • Land of shimp says:

If you click on “Home Info” on the listing page, it almost sounds as if the house has been used as a business, rather than a residence for quite some time. It evidently sits on a highway.

So, that at least is part of what is going on, and may explain why the back looks like it hails from a far more depressing universe.

        • Jak-Jak says:

We actually drive right by this house when we go home (from Dallas, TX to Albuquerque, NM) to see my family. If it was being used as a business, I don’t remember it – it’s probably been vacant for a while.

  11. Quark says:

I think it’s awesome that someone was organised enough to completely color index their entire home. Deep red = kitchen, Green = garden, Orange = driveway, Deep blue = bathroom, Beige = living room. Outdoor walls = black and white. I imagine they have a ring binder folder with colored inserts with an inventory and a list of things to do in each section.

  12. Uzumaki Kariudo says:

It actually kinda reminds me of B.J’s Roadhouse from the Beetlejuice cartoons. XD

  13. MarcyLoo says:

Looks as though poor Doors smartly laid down and played dead so as not to be attacked by the mad paintbrush phantom.
“Okay guys, here he comes, act natural…dooh, dum e dum…OK, NOW!” *doors fall to floor in unison*

  14. And we were all excited about The Purple House.

  15. cinnarose says:

This house looks like it escaped from a MacKenzie-Childs catalogue. Check this out, I’m serious! http://www.mackenzie-childs.com/Decor/

  16. Seamstress says:

I think there is a scary movie called “The Town That Dreaded Sundown” (if I remember it right) based on some murders that happened in Childress, Texas way back when.
Maybe the house is frantically trying to combat the bad mojo.
