Lovely Listing

That’s one heck of a mother-in-law apartment

funny real estate - What Could Be Cozier Than an Underground Bunker?

On the outside, it’s  ”a sandstone constructed lodge with a slate pitched roof.” Go down to the basement to check on the furnace, though, and…

Oh, my. Is this the standard heating apparatus for two-bedroom, one bathroom houses in Scotland?

According to the listing, the basement leads to “a subterranean structure which is believed to have been constructed as a military facility in the 1950’s as a military command centre and operated until approximately 1985,” which is all oddly vague. But come to think of it, I don’t know for sure when the family room was added to my house; I guess I understand how you can forget to ask the right questions when you’re getting the keys from the previous owner.

What could you do with this bunker, you ask? The real estate agent has some suggestions: “a mushroom farm or a large wine store and if the site had been in a more accessible location it would have made a superb night club.” I ask, why limit yourself to just one of those choices?

This room is crying out to be turned into a mushroom farm / large wine store / night club for people from far away. Something sort of like this:

Oontz oontz oontz oontz!

Loveliest comment, by Stuart: “Quite the kitchen you’ve built over your complex, Stavro. Do you expect me to keep this from MI6?”

“No, Mr. Bond. I expect you… to dine.”

“Ah lovely. Thank you.”

“Not at all! Scone?”

    First…

…to say I want this. Where? And how much?

  2. Dennis Eldridge says:

Good heavens I’d give anything for this. This is indeed one of those disguised Cold War bunker complexes, possibly constructed as a refuge for the local government in case big missile faw down go boom.

That said, I’d say ze kiltenbagpipenbunker would be ideal for the mother of all in-laws ;-)

I agree, want, want, want!!!!! It would so sate my need for a subterranean hangout. Not sure where that comes from though I blame Batman…

  3. pepsibookcat says:

I dunno. My first thought was, “WANT!” But, the more I looked at the pictures, the creepier a vibe the place gave off. *shivers*

I do like that it comes with a good sized chunk of land. Between the land and a bunker, there’s good small homesteading potential here if it’s zoned for animals.

Still, even my computer monitor smells haunted now after looking at those pics.

  4. Sangelia says:

    would be nice.
wonder if I could set that one end into a fireplace/forge to work some jewelry work at.

  5. PsychoDad says:

Just don’t look in the “grain” silo out back . . . .

  6. Simon says:

The location map is interesting – looks like you’d be living next door to Craig David and Rich Madam. Unusual that Craig is happy to publish his whereabouts, superstar musicians are generally a bit more guarded about their addresses. I guess times are hard and he doesn’t get as many groupies as he used to.

Regarding the sign in the engine room – I wonder whether the men working on the apparatus are part of the sale, or whether you have to buy them separately?

Charles Stross’s 2007 novel Halting State features a building like this: Scottish cottage on the surface, former military bunker underneath, now (in the novel) used as headquarters for a virtual worlds/game development company. The bunker provides physical security and heavy-duty shielding from electronic spying by competitor companies.

  8. evildave says:

Looks like a good doomsday bunker! The radioactive zombie horde won’t even know you’re down below. Probably has thousands of gallons of fuel and water storage (and on its own well!), not to mention places to keep your other stuff. The bunker pictures actually look like a ‘VaultTec Vault’ from the ‘Fallout’ game series. I spent entirely too much time killing crazed mutants in those places.

And it’s beach-front property! I bet there’s a secret tunnel to sneak straight down to the beach.

  9. M. says:

I want this more than oxygen. Damn.

Can you imagine the Halloween parties? It’d be like something out of Casper, except the teenage boys would be horribly mutated Cold War soldiers with weird accents.

  10. Helen says:

It looks very much like the “Secret nuclear bunker” in Essex. Cute, unassuming bungalow above; huge complex of passages, rooms, telecomms, hospital, sleeping quarters below. Quite something to visit – I’ve been twice, it fascinates me!

    evildave –

Ooooo, the tunnel straight to the beach idea is brilliant! Oh, I have so wanted one of those since seeing the entrance to the pirate’s tunnel at a restaurant in a historic building in Savannah when I was a little girl.

OK, if there’s a tunnel to the beach, I do want it after all!

  12. cornelia says:

The only way I would let my mother in law move in with me is if I could store her in a bunker.

  13. JMixx says:

    “But, Aah-chie…!”

“Eedit, will ya’s stoifle ya-self, deyah?! I’m gonna give dat Meathead a piece a’ my mind!”

  14. Stuart says:

“Quite the kitchen you’ve built over your complex, Stavro. Do you expect me to keep this from MI6?”

If anyone’s interested, it was Centimetric Early Warning R1 ROTOR station. More info on the site here: http://www.subbrit.org.uk/rsg/sites/i/inverbervie/index.html
More info on the ROTOR Radar project here:
    http://www.subbrit.org.uk/rsg/features/rotor/
LOADS more similar sites can be found on the subbrit site… Basically they all generally followed the standard bungalow design.

  16. kayls says:

i would like to live there, plenty of space to hold parties. i dont care if its haunted (actually i would prefer to live in a haunted house cause im a weirdo)

  17. KR says:

It’s like an evil mad scientist starter kit! Kind of like Gru’s house in “Despicable Me”: fairly normal (except for rather dark and forboding) house on the surface, subterranean complex underneath. If only it came with minions…

  18. Mack says:

You should see the view from the property… it’s absolutely gorgeous, with the rolling hills of the countryside one way, and the shore on the other. This place has a lot of potential, and could easily be fixed up into a mansion of sorts.

  19. PRS says:

Considering that no other houses in Scotland look like this except for the secret bunker then it is obvious this was built during the cold war. By the way if you are ever visiting the secret bunker is a great place to visit I hear.

    Just follow the many signs.

  20. Lunisola says:

Did the lisiting also mention that at exactly 12:00 midnight, when the moon is full and clear, and the planets are perfectly aligned, you can hear the sound of Modern Warfare 2? No? You should look that up, before saying something otherwise.

  21. Phoenix says:

Ooooh this would be perfect for my zombie apocalypse plans!!!

  22. THE RESISTANCE says:

We gotta get this or something like this…Just have make a escape route and perimeter defences…would make a good staging area…while it lasts.
