this was the set for the first Lord of the Rings live action movie.
And this is how it’s looked most of the past ten years. The crew of the Hobbit has rebuilt all of them, fully dug out and in stone and wood, and presented the site to the NZ government as a national treasure!
Cool!
WANT!
You might want to reconsider… My in-laws house is only partly bermed and yet it still has a mildewy smell, even with the exposed walls have lots of big windows with incoming sunshine, and also skylights. She’s a good housekeeper, too. Apparently they don’t notice the smell, but sleeping overnight there can make me wake up feeling drugged out of my skull. And no, my mother-in-law is *not* someone I could ever discuss it with.
Most of the houses on this set were just flats dug into the hill like this. I don’t know why there’s no detailing.
Interestingly, for the new “Hobbit” films, they went back to the same location but instead of just building flats like this, they have made all the new “hobbit holes” and the tavern etc. real, inhabitable buildings with utilities. Apparently the thinking is that since these sets have become a tourist destination in their own right, the landowners might want to capitalize on it in future years. How cool is that?
Totally awesome.
I so want to go visit when they’re done. That’s very forward-thinking of them.
Aw that is so cool!! How considerate of them! And I just LOVE those Hobbit holes!
Eventually some enterprising soul will just build a hobbit village and sell the homes to regular buyers for occupancy.
How fun would that be?
Google “shire bend oregon.” There was a guy who had plans to build a whole housing development in Bend, Oregon in the Middle-Earth style. It failed (only a couple of houses were built), but you can find artist’s renderings of what it was supposed to look like.
* takes out bucket list, amends it to include more reason to visit New Zealand *
If this was indeed taken at the Hobbiton set in New Zealand, its publication to the web is illegal. So says the rules you agree to when you buy your ticket to go there.
And they think they can actually make that stick? These days, once you let anyone make an image of something you have/own/create, you’re screwed. Tracking down the posts, let alone finding out who made them and where/how they got the pic is insanely difficult.
Besides, while the little place pictured here is cute, it sure does *not* look professional. Actually looks like a cheap set for a high school play. And everyone already knows what a hobbit house looks like, so why are they getting their knickers in a bunch?
Home sweet home. It’s like the rebuilding of the Shire after the scouring that they didn’t cover in LOTR.
