Ugh, a straight staircase is so PEDESTRIAN!
Found by: Unknown
oooh. Me, me, me. I wantz it!
Beautiful. Anyone know where it’s from?
Looks like an art gallery somewhere in Europe. No idea where exactly, though.
I was thinking along the lines of a palace maybe?
Could be, but it would still be a gallery room in a palace. There’s lots of artwork hanging on the walls and there are also two items on easels on the far side of the staircase. Doesn’t matter to me; looks just as cool regardless!
It’s actually in Paris. It’s an artist’s home there from something like the 1800′s. Anyhow this is on the second floor of a beautiful house. I just happened upon this picture knowing I’ve been there. Very cool staircase.
A Steampunk Staircase!
At first I was OH how beautiful…then my tummy said…oh no. That would make me a little sick.
This ^ Not for me, thanks.
LIKE A BOSS.
Want, want, want, want…..
My googling has turned up that it’s in a chateau in Provence, France. Can’t seem to find any more detail than that.
Apologies, my googling was wrong. It’s at the Gustav Moreau Museum in Paris.
Stairs, stairs, Paris is full of stairs. I love Paris but my knees don’t.
Then you might want to skip Siena, Italy. **Gorgeous** medieval town, but hilly as hell! Super steep grades, some on their own, some with staircases added to ease navigation. Either way, if you have any health problems, or God forbid are in a wheelchair, you are SOL in Sienna.
Image #9 of 26 at this site – http://dennisrhollowayarchitect.com/EuropeanSketchbook.html – gives you an idea of what I’m talking about. This takes you up the hill at the back of the Cathedral to the entry level piazza. It’s the only image of it I could find, although it looks just like the photo I took 20 years after this was drawn.
Put me in the “want, Want, WANT!!!” category!
Definitely awe-inspiring. What craft and workmanship.
I guess I see things a little bit differently than other people. My frist reaction was.”How do you clean that thing?!” LOL I see myself struggling with the vacuum cleaner and its cord as I go around and around. And don’t get me started on trying to clean the railings.
My Dear, that is what “the help” is for!
^This
Silly me. Why didn’t I think of that?
Definitely: an army of help, each bearing three sizes of camel hair brushes. Even the minds of those who conceive and own such things are untouched by such a thing as “cleaning,” having staff sufficient to think of it for them, too…
When my husband and I toured the Biltmore Mansion, I remember quipping that our entire yearly income would be wiped out just by buying enough floor polish… for the first floor… for one polishing. D’OH.
I don’t like heights, but I could like walking on those stairs.
I like the steps–significantly less height than most, and deep horizontally (if that makes sense): I think even my bad knees could make it up and down these. And from what I can see, there’s only one flight–although I worry about that opening in the ceiling: I’d hate to go all the way up only to plunge down through the gap unexpectedly. Also, I’m not sure exactly what happens above the ceiling level: there’s something about the whole design that makes me think of a Moebius strip, but I think that would be impossible–although way cool if possible.
A lot of outdoor stairs in Italy (and I assume other parts of Europe) are quite low per stair and very deep. They’re actually more a means to navigate hills, rather than actual staircases. They also make it easier for donkeys to navigate when pulling carts. There are often two channels on either side, a cart axle’s width apart.
Seems the opening has a rail on the next floor up. The floor seems to be a horseshoe shape, though we can’t see it to the right of the stair.
A Moebius strip staircase… you’ve been looking at Escher’s stuff again, haven’t you, lol? I have a feeling if those really existed, they wouldn’t take you between floors, but between dimensions…
*cue Twilight Zone theme song*

Just a tip for you guys, since I thought the same thing: “Beautiful!! Where the heck is it? ”
You can click and drag any photo into a google search bar, and you’ll get results as to who, what, when, where. It’s very handy!
Enjoy
