I hope that’s not in an earthquake zone
The library of Damocles?
Ummm….No thank you
….would have been an awesome title.
I like it but how do you expand your collection!!
portals.
Yuppie-a$$ room. Everything in it’s place nicely.
This isn’t made to be practicle, just look good. It’s pretentious and I don’t like pretentions.
I actually really like this. All the books are there and readily accessible, but they’re out of the way. I would love to have a room like that.
Books too far away…put the bookcases down on the floor level in a circle…that’d be cool. Circular shaped library…..cool.
At first I wondered how you wheel the library ladder around its track without the lower end tearing up the floor; did the floor perchance rotate with the ladder? But then I decided it’s not a proper library ladder at all, but just a more or less ordinary telescoping extension ladder; so now I wonder how you climb up without the ladder tearing up the books.
Much more practical (and awe-inspiring) would be to have a sort of elevator suspension mechanism. You’d be able to wheel the chair to the middle, press a button or something, and have the whole shelf ring smoothly descend from the ceiling to a comfortable height. That would be nifty.
One other thing: where are the electrical outlets for things on the desk? Must you rely solely on the laptop’s battery, and recharge it elsewhere?
Outlets – There are specialized strip outlets that shouldn’t be confused with a power strip. They are very long affairs with a running set of channels, one for each of the prongs on an American style power cord plug. You simply plug in anywhere along the length that you like. These often run along the back edge of a desk or counter, but can also run under the bottom side of overhead cabinets.
That laptop looks older than the steamer trunk, wow.
I noticed that too!
Isn’t a steamer trunk the kind that stands on one end, has drawers & hangers inside & opens out like a small closet? I have one of those, and I’ve always called it a “steamer trunk”. This one looks like just a regular trunk/storage box to me.
I have a computer that old – it contains a lot of research material in applications no longer accessible with new computers – and I don’t have to transfer everything from the hundreds(!!!) of floppies in my library. I also have an ancient word processor and an IBM Selectric III – the BEST typewriter EVER! Just because something is old doesn’t mean it is now useless. Think books. And, yes, I am a geek.
Exception to “doesn’t mean it is now useless” – Polaroid cameras for which there is no longer film. D’OH.
There are exceptions to everything, Emerald. That doesn’t make the statement, in context, invalid.
True that.
This room looks cool, but if I’ve got to ascend a ladder to get to my beloved books, it would definitely need to be more substantial and with a more stable set up than this one. Firmly attached at both top and bottom, set into a proper rail at the top and permanently affixed to a turntable of sorts at the bottom. I’d also need a heavier build with side rails, along with some sort of mechanism for lowering/lifting my book choices so I don’t break my neck carrying them.
I have a bit of a problem with the longitudinal stripes on the carpet and the color palette isn’t very extensive or sophisticated, but the overall design is intriguing. I’d add a windowed oculus above the rotunda, though. Make the ladder a nice stained wood with brass rails, a la the classic library ladder, toss in a few squashy throw pillows to offset the hard surfaces everywhere, and I’d be much happier.
That’s not a carpet.
Wood or stone inlay? OK, still not a pattern I would have chosen. There’s already enough going on in that room. If you’re gonna have a prominent circular format any counterpoint has to be done very carefully and any extraneous elements (wall hangings, objects on the counters) kept to a minimum.
Personally, I would’ve chosen a solid round of color for that end of the room, perhaps somewhat smaller than the counter top edge, with the lighter floor from the foreground running back under the counters to the far end of the room and peaking out from under the counters as a border for the rounded area. I don’t think the repetition of round elements would be too much because all the book spines above provide good visual variation without competing with the overall effect.
It saves so much wall space, so you can hang your decorative …er…. bath-towels?
Hey, they might come in handy, ’cause that room really makes a splash!
I like the lower work room.
Ouch! My neck hurts from looking up and trying to see where I placed the book I want.
Um, if a ladder isn’t anchored to something or on a track, aren’t you supposed to have some one holding it when you use it? How annoying could that get if you need to routinely find some one to hold the ladder while you climb up it to get a book? :-/
Either this is a very old picture or a very geeky person lives here… that laptop is a PowerBook 140/170/1xx-whatever ca. 1991!
